Day 5 (Monday August 12th)
"Cinema and Chillin'
This is a quick blog because on this day we pretty much rested. A late start with an hour in the pool (did I mention how great this pool was??? ;-)
We then drove over to Downtown Disney West Side to the AMC24 cinema. Joanne and I have been going here for years. Pre-kids we'd go here to see just about every new film that was out. It seems such a nicer experience going to the cinema here, I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it's the different snacks, the HUGE drinks (with lots of ice) or the really comfortable seating.
As a treat we decided to book to see Planes, the new Disney/Pixar film in a dine-in theatre. The seats are ULTRA comfortable and you have a table in front of you with a call button. You order food before the movie starts and your meal is brought to your table as it begins. The servers are great and discreetly pass by with drink refills as soon as your glass is empty. Wonder how long this will take to catch on in the UK because it's a really unique and fun experience. There's that 'fun' word again...but that really IS what this trip is so far :-)
Planes was fairly good (I only fell asleep twice, with Jack telling me to wake up both times) and afterwards it was a quick treat of a chocolate dipped strawberry and a very sickly looking blue cupcake for Jack.
Back to the hotel and then on the monorail for a quick jaunt around the Magic Kingdom. It was late afternoon and still really hot. After dropping $24 on two balloons it was into Starbucks for a couple of Frappuccino's and once again over to Frontierland to ride Splash Mountain (check out Jack on the photo below) and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. After that it was over to The Haunted Mansion for Jack's first ride on there. It's all been updated and there's some really great visuals on there now. As i've already said, this park is over 40 years old. I came here when it was 17 years old and it still feels as fresh and relevant now as it did then.
We then battled through the crowds waiting for the Main Street Electrical Parade to head back to the Polynesian to have a late swim in the pool. aaaahhhhh, the Polynesian Pool....did I mention....etc etc ;-)
At 10pm we watched Wishes, the Magic Kingdom fireworks show from our pool...it was time for goosebumps and pinching ourselves once again.
We finished the day with pizza and burgers in bed (hey, we're allowed....we're on holiday) and then it was lights out after the kids passed out from exhaustion.
