Day 10 (Saturday 17th)
"Sci-Fi Dining"
Today we had to be up and off to Hollywood Studios as we had lunch reservations for one of our favourites, the Sci-Fi Dine In Theater. Disney World has some great themed restaurants but this has been a favourite of Joanne and mine since we first came across it back in 1993. It's brilliant fun as it's themed on an outdoor American 'Drive In' movie place. Disney do the whole 'You're inside but let's make it look like you're outside at midnight' thing perfectly. You really can believe you're sat in a car, outside, watching a huge movie screen.
The movies they show are old 'B' Movie clips and classic Disney cartoons which the kids love and they were perfectly quiet the whole time (a MASSIVE achievement on this holiday ;-) The food is the usual Burgers, Chicken Nuggets, Coke etc. etc. It's better than other places but still...we're kinda tiring of this kind of food and a quick Subway here and there is helping our stomachs recover. It's mainly 'food on the go' for us this holiday though. It might seem we're eating lots but it's the only time we get to sit down and actually take some time out from everything else we're doing.
The afternoon was spent 'doing' the rides at Hollywood Studios. First up was one for Jack, 'Disney Junior Live On Stage', a live action show based on some of Jack's favourite Disney Junior shows such as The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Jack (and I reckon Josh) enjoyed this 15 minute show which featured set pieces from the above shows played out by puppets with lots of interaction with the kids in the audience.
Next up was an old favourite of mine, The Great Movie Ride, a 22 minute trip through some of the greatest moments in Hollywood history. You can see some of the movies featured in the pictures below. It's always entertaining even when you know what's going to happen (your ride host gets abducted by a gun wielding gangster during the first part of the ride but returns later to save the day). Jack and Josh sat right up front with all the action and loved it. I think Jack must have ridden this last time but didn't remember. It's amazing how many of the rides Jack rode 2 years ago and loved at the time but he obviously doesn't remember any of it. His face is a picture, always smiling, always enjoying.
Another ride on Toy Story Mania next. Josh always wants to ride with me and try and beat my score. I always beat him....I WANT to let him win but it's such a frantic game that I just can't help myself. You have to fire rapidly at the 3D screens and get as many points as you can before your ride car moves onto the next screen. I can't help myself...I just HAVE to score highly. Sorry Josh ;-)
Tower Of Terror time again. Jack and Josh love this (as do we) and we could quite easily ride it over and over. I seem to remember Joanne and I once did it about 5 times in a row :-) It's a ride where you 'freefall' drop 170 foot in an elevator. Your stomach hits your throat every time and it repeats the drop 3 or 4 times during your ride. What many people don't know though is that the ride doesn't just freefall....there are cables and motors that PULL the ride car downwards giving it that extra 'aaaarrrgggghhhhhhh' factor and forcing your body to leave your seat (you're held in by a lap seatbelt only). Heeehe, it's fantastic :-)
Joanne and Jack then headed towards the exit and the shops while Josh and I sneaked on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. This is an indoor 'dark' coaster with 3 inversions and a starting speed of 0-60mph in under 3 seconds. It makes me want to hurl a little but Josh adores it. It IS a fun ride though and Aerosmith music and sound effects they play is perfectly in sync with the action in the ride.
We met Joanne and Jack afterwards and Jack is always wanting to know "was it really good Josh". Josh is brilliant and says "no, it was just 'OK' Jack, you didn't miss much". Jack would go on EVERY SINGLE RIDE here if he was tall enough. I think we've drilled it into the boys since day 1 that theme park rides are nothing to be scared of and it's worked...they're just like Joanne and me :-)
It was getting late so we got the sherbet that Jack has been asking for and headed back to the hotel to get ready to go get something to eat.
This night was a really classy Italian joint we've found that serves Pizza and Salad and Pasta 'n' stuff. It's called Pizza Hut.
It served a purpose (quick n easy) and we were back at the hotel by 11pm to catch up on some zzzzzzzzz's
Another big day finished. We really are cramming it in. In week 3 we could probably take it easy and do some sunbathing and relaxing by the pool but let's face it, we don't get to come here very often so while we're here we're gonna give it 110%. As long as we're 1 monorail stop from the best theme park in the world, The Magic Kingdom, we're gonna totally take advantage of it.
